![]() In this high-tech age, every manager can’t be expected to know all the details of computer technology. Napoleon managed huge armies, but also knew how to take apart and reassemble a canon. There may be a circumstance for an important tangent to be mentioned, but that should not be the normal occurrence. When you present a myriad of tangential possibilities, it only serves to cloud the issue and gets people off track. In communications, if you provide sufficient details, people will be able to connect the dots. Other times, it can be interpreted as invasive or controlling because it seems like you are trying to get the team members to think or feel a certain way. Many times, the reader wishes you would just get to the point. If you send your team members extensive and detailed communiqués, you may find they are not only a waste of time, but are usually annoying to the reader. Even though emails are extremely popular these days, unfortunately they are oftentimes misunderstood and limit the potential of an interaction. Quick conversations over the phone are also a good means of discussion. Generally speaking, meetings with coworkers are the most effective means of communication. Oftentimes, when you sit with a person in an open-ended way, important new ideas and perspectives come up during the conversation. Furthermore, this approach does not limit your conversations. The topics and details will fall right into place when you sit down with them. All you need is a list of people you need to communicate with that day. There is no need to write the details down. As a manager, you know what needs to happen with each person. When your management responsibilities involve a group of people, you will find that the bullet points are more effectively represented by a list of names, not tasks. Complete sentences are usually unnecessary and end up encumbering the list. At most, some of your bullet points could be followed with one or more minor points, just to ensure you don’t forget those details. If you try to write every single one of them down at length, you will begin to lose the trees for the forest. ![]() Before beginning your day, to keep anything from slipping through the cracks, it’s a good idea to jot those points down on a Post-it note.Įach bullet point on your list can trigger a great deal of detail, but those details are already in your head. That list of points should be very clear in your head. If you are really clear on your purpose, even the most complex management challenges boil down to a handful of main points. You are a manager, if not of a corporation or family, then certainly of your own life. A good manager knows his business that well. A very successful engineer with multiple patents had a motto: “Keep it simple stupid.” Ancient sages said that to really know something is to know it in seed form, just as all knowledge of a tree is contained in the seed. Albert Einstein said that you don’t really understand anything unless you can explain it to your grandmother.
